Bamana Hunter's Tunic - Circa 1900 - Mali, Africa

The Bamana people have traditionally been a farming and hunting culture living on the western edge of the Sahara Desert. The Hunter's Shirt has played a significant part in ancient rituals and ceremonies of the hunt. These ceremonies prepare the hunter to enter a world of dangerous animals and spirits. The garment is decorated with charms that have protective powers. Animal teeth, claws, horns, mirrors, shells, etc. are attached to a tunic, along with secret pouches called 'Basi.' If the Basi are opened the charms inside lose their power to ward off evil and misfortune.

Tunic measures 5 feet, 3 inches length, including fringe; 5 feet, 9-1/2 inches width.
