Tajikistan Wedding Necklace, Circa 1890

Tajikistan, a mountainous, landlocked country in Central Asia, is bordered by Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north and China to the east. The Tajik cultures dates back to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. It was influenced by Buddhism, Nestorian Christianity, Zoroastrianism, and Islam. Traditionally, their necklaces carried a supernatural and protective function, also indicating the social standing, age, ethnicity, and gender of its wearer. The wedding necklace passed down through many generations within a family.

This necklace is in excellent condition, containing six strands of antique Mediterranean Coral intertwined into two strands with two antique shell beads and a variety of antique silver components. Black glass trade beads are also used. Necklace is 36" in length. The silver pendant is 3" in width, 1 1/2" in length with 4" of dangles.
