These festive beads were called 'Christmas Beads' by Africans who thought they resembled the brightly lit Christmas trees of Europeans. These beads date to the early years of the 20th century and were traded extensively in Gambia where they are still sought after and collected by the indigenous people. Beads are approximately 2-3mm in size and have a variety of solid colors and stripes. Strands measure approximately 30".
