Larimar is a rare blue variety of the silicate mineral, Pectolite, found only in the Dominican Republic. Quality is determined by coloration and comes in shades from a bluish-white to a green with red and brown strikes dues to the presence of other minerals or oxidation. The more intense blue color (such as this offering) has a greater value and is much rarer. The blue color is photosensitive and fades in time if exposed to too much light or heat.Larimar was first found by Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren in 1916 who requested permission to explore the area, but the request was rejected by the Ministry of Mining. In 1974, Miguel Mendez and Peace Corps volunteer, Norman Rilling, rediscovered Larimar on the beach at the foot of the Bahoruco Mountain Range. The few stones they found were alluvial sediment, washed into the sea by the Bahoruco River. An upstream search revealed the source and the Los Chupaderos Mine was founded. The ethereal blue of Larimar is exquisite and haunting... no other stone resembles it. It's an investment because the price is escalating due to the scarcity of this stone. We love it combined with Rubies or Garnets... Pearls, also.Price is per 15-1/2" strand. Will not go to the site on April 1.
