Reversible Necklace by Charlene Sanchez Reano

Charlene Reano, a native of San Felipe Pueblo, married Frank Reano of Pueblo Santo Domingo, the brother of Angie Reano Owen. She studied art at New Mexico Highlands University where she experimented with color in fresh and innovative ways. Charlene learned the prehistoric Anasazi technique of inlay from her sister-in-law, Angie, who introduced it into contemporary jewelry. Collaborating with her husband, Charlene usually selects the stones and Frank does the cutting, grinding and polishing. She is known for her original color, unique materials, and new concepts in jewelry such as this double-sided necklace. These double-sided necklaces are true collector's items, part of the family's legacy that revolutionized contemporary Native American jewelry. They have honored the past and turned it into the very chicest of fashion. Charlene has exhibited in and been collected by numerous museums. Annually, she has showings in New York and California where Europeans fly in to buy her work. She has won awards at all the major Indian Markets.

Our necklace comes from an important collection in Sedona and was purchased directly from the artist. It is set on the traditional shell base and inlaid with Kingman, Arizona Turquoise, Lapis Lazuli, Spiny Oyster, Mother-of-Pearl, and Melon shell. It measures 16" in length. The pendant slabs in front are approximately 1 3/4" in length and 1 1/2" in width, graduating to 3/4" in length and 1/4" wide in the back. The clasp is sterling silver.

Searching the internet, we found two trading posts in the Southwest that each offered one of these necklaces. One is priced at $5,800.00 and the other at $6,900.00.
